Investigation of anaemia

Anaemia is a deficiency in the number of red blood cells. Symptoms of anaemia may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint
  • Shortness of breath

There are several kinds of anaemia, but an anaemia that is associated with low iron can be due to:

  • Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Failure to absorb iron or other vitamins and minerals such as folic acid or vitamin B12

An anaemia that is associated with low iron or vitamin levels requires investigation with blood tests, an endoscopy (OGD) and colonoscopy.
